JLP+D was part of an interdisciplinary team to reimagine Peachtree Street - Atlanta’s “Main Street” - as a “shared space” that provides safer, more efficient and sustainable transportation options for moving through the core of downtown and creates new public spaces that can enhance the vibrancy of the corridor. JLP+D’s primary role was to understand the current economic and real estate conditions along the Peachtree Street corridor and advise on how these dynamics could affect the implementation and both the short and long-term success of the shared space project. This included an analysis of the area’s daytime population and workforce, rents across real estate sectors, new development and investment activity, and land and street-level use composition, among other indicators.
Additionally, JLP+D led the exploration of and stakeholder engagement around potential programming strategies that can activate ground-level public and private spaces (storefronts, privately-owned plazas, etc.), create a destination for both locals and tourists, promote civic pride and project the city’s identity, and expand Peachtree Street’s base of daily users beyond office workers and visitors. A programming and activation approach that is effective and informed by local knowledge is vital to ensuring the project’s positive economic impacts as well as building a base of political support for the project going forward.
