The Brickline Greenway, formerly the Chouteau Greenway, in St. Louis, Missouri is envisioned as a new five-mile-long public realm armature around which new economic and social investments will be organized, with a focus on equity. The Greenway proposal aimed to connect two of the city’s most iconic and frequently visited destinations: Forest Park and the Eero Saarinen-designed Gateway Arch along the Mississippi River. Much of the vision involved the retrofitting or repurposing of urban infrastructure to create greener spaces as well as programming opportunities that stand to suture together historically divided communities.

JLP+D conducted in-depth research on equitable economic development, provided economic advisory and activation consulting services to the team, and was part of the extensive community engagement process. JLP+D has prioritized the programs which create year-round destinations and accommodate a wide range of activities along the greenway’s path, including formal and informal public art, classroom spaces and education opportunities, and healthy living initiatives. JLP+D additionally advised on the identification of strategic implementation partners who could assist with financing and/or programming elements.
